Pre-Good Bye

As the end of May is approaching and many changes are happening this coming year for ATSU, (with semesters, earlier start dates, dental school etc.) the SAA is doing a few things to get excited for growth and change! 

This is the first announcement of a new blog http://atsu-saamissouri.blogspot.com/ that will be taking the place of this one. Everything that has been posted and recorded here from previous years has been added to the new site. If there are memories for those members who have moved on, never fear, they still exist. 

Please visit the new blog and add it to your own blog rolls, or sign up for the posts to arrive in your email. There is a place in the right hand column to enter your email address, and then you're done! Simple as that!

We are excited about all that is happening here in Kirksville and plan to continue to keep you updated!

I grew up in Orem, Ut and my husband grew up in Las Vegas.  We met at BYU and both studied Exercise Science.  We graduated together and shortly after moved to Kirksville and had our sweet little boy, Carter.  I love camping, gerber daisies, running, homemade bread, Celine Dion, spaghetti, and boating.

*What is the first concert you went to?

In 5th grade I went to the Backstreet Boys Concert.  Nick was so dreamy!

*What is one of your most embarrassing moments?

When I was younger, I was changing my clothes in a bathroom stall.  I saw that my little sister came to change in the stall next to me (I recognized her shoes).  I reached under the stall and grabbed her foot and started shaking it and making funny noises.  I then realized it wasn't my sister in the stall next to me.  Needless to say, I booked it out of there as fast as I could.  

*What is one thing most people don't know about you?

I still have one of my baby teeth.  It just doesn't want to leave me I guess.

*What was one of your favorite vacations?

My family goes to Lake Powell (in Southern Utah) every summer.  I love, water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. It has been, and probably always will be my favorite vacation spot.

-Tell us a little bit about yourself:  I'm a Texas girl who met a guy from Washington state, though he claims Hawaii as his true home.  Met in Utah, moved to Missouri for Med School and now live in Ohio while we finish up 3rd/4th year.  I love to read and want to be a librarian some day.  I'm a lover of history and spent a semester in London before I got married.  It was seriously one of the best times ever!  I'm learning to love running and I enjoy volleyball and especially love watching the summer Olympics.  Kris and I have three kids: Isaac is 6, Kaylie is 4, and Jessica is 19 months.  Kris and I love to cook together and with the kids and we all enjoy playing games together.  Lovin' life!

*If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?  A trip to France with Kris. 

*What is your favorite tv show?  I currently cannot get enough of Walking Dead... seriously LOVE that show!   Then again I just straight up LOVE TV, so I'm a big fan of that in general ;)

*What was the best job you ever had?  I loved being a waitress and having a part in people having a great meal and a great night out.

*What was one of your favorite vacations?  Spent 10 days in Hong Kong when I was 11 with my family.  My parents lived there before I was born so they were able to show our family around and see a place very special to them and one that is fascinating too.

*What is your favorite food? Dill (NOT kosher) pickles, buttered movie popcorn, pastries, a fantastic steak with a loaded baked potato, and thick slice of chocolate cake with a fat scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

*What is the first concert you went to?  A Rolling Stones concert that was opened up by Smashing Pumpkins!

Danny and I are from a small town in Southeastern Idaho.  We met in high school, where we competed in Cross Country and Track together.  We have been ‘running’ together ever since.  In August we had a wonderful baby boy, who we named Kohner.  It has been so much fun to watch him grow and develop, and it has happen all too fast!

*What would be your perfect day?  “I’d have to say April 25^th. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.” Unless you live in Missouri, then you might need an AC unit or a heavy rain coat

*What are your top five favorite things to do? Be with Family. Be Outside. Camp. Ride Horses. Boating.  Snow machining. Sledding. I think that’s more than five.

*If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Anywhere with Danny and Kohner!

*What was the best job you ever had? Being a Mom.

*What was one of your favorite vacations? Premed School, every summer we would go on a weeklong pack trip around the Thorofare by Yellowstone National Park.  The Outdoors, Family, Horses, Camping, and Fishing, it doesn’t get any better!

-Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I grew up and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio my entire life.  I graduated from the University of Cincinnati's DAAP (Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning) Program in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design.  Upon entering my last year of the program, I began creating, what would blossom into a life long vision.  Almost 5 years later, I continue to work on developing my own line of women's scuba diving performance apparel.  Launching the initial collection via the web, my goal is to eventually own a dive center and research facility where the collection would also be available.

Todd and I met at UC in 2008.  Todd was actually the one who introduced me to scuba diving my last year of school which completely changed my life.  Todd and I have a 15 month old son namedTryden.  We have been engaged for about 5 years.  Prior to entering medical school Todd was in a bad car accident that left him with a broken back, foot, hand, and many other injuries.  He spent months in a wheelchair and had to learn how to walk again.  Once we completed that chapter we found out we were pregnant with our son.  One would naturally assume, what better of a time to finally have the wedding?!  Since we had spent so long holding out for what we had initially planned (a small, destination wedding) we decided to wait until we could have what we had been waiting for.  Which brings us to now: in medical school, even less money, and no time.  So the point to this story is....I think we are just permanently engaged?!?!

*What is the craziest thing you've ever done?  

I went canyoning in Interlaken, Switzerland.  We hiked up the Swiss Alps and came down via the canyons that were created between the mountains.  Jumping off cliffs, thru waterfalls, repelling, sliding, everything and anything you had to do...there was only one way down!!

*What was the best job you ever had?

Ironically I didn't even get paid....it was a volunteer position that was very hard to obtain.  I was a volunteer scuba diver at the Newport Aquarium.  This was such an amazing experience.  We had to learn everything about the aquarium: facts about the tanks and animals, how to prepare all of the food, and what each animal's mandatory diet was. We had to learn how to dive each tank, feed all the animals, interact with them, and then clean the tanks.  Each tank had its technical challenges with the environmental props and the constant awareness of what was all around you while you were working in the space.  Each tank had its own personality. It was fun to get to know the individual animals but also to learn how to interact with them as a group and making sure they were all fed properly.  After feedings we would interact with the animals and then clean the tanks.  Todd and I became the go to "fish extractors" and we wrangled a huge Pacu to the surface who had "popeye".  The eye was removed, a marble put in its place and returned to the tank happily.  Another morning on our walk thru of the aquarium I noticed some very tiny baby fish huddled in a corner.  We had to go in and rescue as many as possible otherwise they would have been eaten.  It was an amazing privilege to have had this opportunity and I miss it dearly.

*What is one thing most people don't know about you?

I went backpacking with a friend across Europe.  In three months we officially stayed in 12 countries and 30 cities.  Traveling primarily by train we saw much of the European countryside.

*Where is the most amazing place you've ever been?

So hard to answer this question, so many come to mind, for different reasons.

A small, Greek island called Naxos was literally a paradise I will never forget.

-Tell us a little bit about yourself:

          I grew up in Milwaukee, WI and went to college at Saint Louis University where I met my husband Blake.  We got married in June 2010 and moved to Kirksville in July.  I teach a full day pre-school at the Early Childhood Learning center and I love it! Giraffes are my all time favorite animal.  We have really enjoyed staying in Kirksville for rotations and I am super excited to be on the board next year! 

What are your top five favorite things to do? Run (especially on trails), hang out/chat with friends and family, read, bake and I’m learning to play the guitar which has been fun.

What is the craziest thing you've ever done? Get a tattoo (shamrock on my foot for Irish Dancing)

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Ireland, all of my ancestry can be traced back to Ireland (100% Irish!) and I have never been, when I do go I plan on exploring the whole country.  After that I would head to Africa and stay in a hotel where giraffes peek their heads in the windows and say hi. This hotel really does exist and it is on my bucket list!  

What is your favorite movie? When Harry met Sally OR Finding Nemo – I could literally watch either one over and over again and never get sick of it! (I am so excited for Finding Dory in 2 years!!)

What was the best job you ever had? My current job! I love teaching and spending my day with children. 

What was one of your favorite vacations? Our honeymoon, it was so relaxing spending every day on the beach!

What is your favorite holiday and why? Thanksgiving, the most fun holiday to teach about (do not have to be worried about being politically correct) and it’s a fun family holiday without the pressure/stress of gift giving.  A close second would have to be St. Patrick’s Day, however it was more fun back when I was still dancing.

What is your favorite season and why? The inbetween seasons – fall and spring, the best seasons for running outside!

I am a farm girl from Preston, ID! I love being with my family!I have two beautiful children, Anthony who is 3 and Annalee who is 18 months. I am a hair stylist, which is a great social opportunity for me, since I am a little shy and don't talk a lot unless i am cutting your hair or already know you. I have cut/colored many of you girls hair in SAA  and I have really enjoyed getting to know you! I enjoy ballroom dancing with my hubby and having a dance party in my living room with my kids (this happens a lot to pass the time)! I have loved living in Missouri, but I really do miss the beautiful mountains of home! I like to do crafts, swim, snowmobile, and I would love to know how to grow plants/garden, however they always seem to die on me. I have made some wonderful friends and met some amazing people in SAA! I love it!

*What was one of your favorite vacations?

I love anything Disney , I have been to Disneyland a couple of times, which is great, but in 2008 I was able to go on a Disney Cruise with all my family, and a big group of friends/family of about 80 people! We spent about two days at Disney World before going on the cruise! I highly recommend this, it was awesome! We also went during Halloween, which is one of my favorite times of year ( the more fun and happy side of Halloween, not the creepy, spooky side). If you have ever been to a Disney park during a holiday, they decorations are fantastic! Disney World mixed with a Disney Cruise to the Caribbean has to be my favorite places, especially since I was with all the people that I love!

*What is the craziest thing you've ever done?

This isn't too crazy, but in fall 2008 before I got pregnant with my first child, we lived in Rexburg, ID, so we were super close to the Teton mountains. Gio had always wanted to take me backpacking, so we hiked up Cascade Canyon and up into the South Fork, camped the night. Then we hiked back down the next day. Oh my heavens, I was super sore, I didn't prepare enough for it, when we got to the fork, my legs would not work anymore, Gio had to carry my pack! Plus, we had to be careful of bears, which made me even more nervous. I did have a lot of fun camping with GIo though!

*How did you and your significant other meet?

Gio and I grew up together. I didn't know him personally, but I his younger sister was my friend and my older sister was his good friend. I had his dad for a science teacher in 7th grade, and my dad was Gio's wrestling coach. We met for real in high school when we were both on the ballroom dance team and got put together for a dance. My mom was a coach and teaching us the dance, so we would have practices at my house. Now in high school I was super shy if I didn't know you that well, so this gave Gio the chance to see me with my family, where i am not shy at all. Being at my house for practices is where he fell in love with me! 

*If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I love learning about genealogy, and where my family came from. Some came from Germany and some from England and Scotland. I would love to go to these places someday! 

*What was the best job you ever had?

I have only had like 3 jobs in my life, one was moving chicken's, If you have ever seen Napoleon Dynamite, yes i am from there, the part where Napoleon is moving chickens and the old farmer is cracking an egg into the orange juice, yeah that is an actual job, that most the kids do in Preston during the summer. This however was not my favorite job, I grew up on a farm, which was my favorite job! It wasn't the actual work that I liked, it was the fact that I got to work with my family! My dad and uncle own a dairy farm, so I got to spend lots of quality time with my cousins and siblings, while learning hard work ethic!

-Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I am a busy mother of 2. I love all things pertaining to music, food, and exercise. I aspire to be crafty and creative, however the role of motherhood has created a pause in developing those qualities I would like to achieve. Recently I went through a try to make my favorite recipes healthier quick, which created several unfortunate creations in my kitchen. Until I get the hang of the ALL healthy eating, I will continue to cook my recipes the same. Apart from mothering and the little time of sanity I give myself through exercise, I enjoy playing the piano and singing. You can always know if I am in a good mood if I am humming or singing a song. 

*How did you and your significant other meet? Tyler and I met at a Memorial Day BBQ at a mutual friend's home. We were drawn to each other immediately upon meeting one another as we spent the evening talking about primarily Tyler's life and experiences he had as he served a Latter-Day-Saint Mission to Florida and the Bahamas. It made for an incredibly interesting evening filled with hurricanes and the clean up and of course the stories of people who were met.  My favorite thing about Tyler when I first met him was how passionate he was about his mission. No other boy I dated who had served seemed as interested in sharing the details as Tyler was. 

*If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Right now in the middle of a snowstorm, I would like to be somewhere tropical and exotic. I would prefer to go somewhere I haven't been before. The place that comes to mind is Patong Beach in Thailand. You have all probably seen the picture of the huts on the water? Yeah, that is where I would LOVE to be right now. One day, I would like to travel the world and visit each continent and be able to experience that cultures that each has to offer.

*What was the best job you ever had? My first job, though the least paying job, was the BEST job I ever had. I worked at Cold Stone Creamery. I loved being able to work with ice cream and interact with people all day. Ice cream and customers who love ice cream, what is not to love? The fact we got to munch on all the toppings and the ice cream as we worked was also a huge plus. Our managers were pretty cool in that they allowed us to take home our latest inventions and have our families test taste them. It made for some interesting combinations.

*What is your favorite season and why? What I love most about seasons is the transition that occurs from one season to another. The transition from winter to spring with the blooms blossoming on the trees and the tulips popping up out of the ground and the smell of rain is beautiful. The transition from spring to summer where the leaves of the trees are in full bloom and provide ample shade from the warm sun that is not too hot yet. The transition from summer to fall as the leaves turn from green to red, orange, and gold is incredible. The transition from fall to winter isn't as dramatic, however the first snow of the season is magical and pure.

-Tell us a little bit about yourself:   I grew up in the Brickyard area of Salt Lake City, Utah in a family of 4 girls. I double majored in English Literature and Mass Communication at the University of Utah and graduated in 2009. Dan and I met in the summer of 2010, we were married on June 24, 2011 and three weeks later moved here to Kirksville. It's been great so far! We're excited to move to Lititz, PA for rotations this June but will miss all the wonderful friends we've made here. I'm generally a pretty quiet person but I love spending time with friends, trying new things, running, snowboarding, hiking, crafting, sewing, music and reading. My dream is to someday write awesome books! 

 

*Where is the most amazing place you've ever been?

Scotland! It is so green and foggy and historic, we explored abandoned castles and I found a plaque with my ancestors name in one of them.  

*If you could eat at any restaurant for your birthday, what would it be? That's hard, but I love California Pizza Kitchen, or some cheese fries from the Training Table. 

*How did you and your significant other meet? We met through a mutual friend on the 4th of July. We were in a group playing croquet and Dan actually was partnered with my little sister, who I had dragged along, but by the end of the night we ended up together. We dated steadily from that night on. 

*What was one of your favorite vacations? I've been to some really cool places, but I always love sleeping on top of a houseboat at Lake Powell in the summer.

Karl and I got married the day after I finished college, almost 8 years ago. We have 3 beautiful kiddos; the latest addition was a week ago! We're adjusting to a new member of the family. Karl did the Masters in Anatomy here first and is currently a 2nd year med student. We're sticking around another year for the fellowship. I love spending time with family, reading, traveling. I enjoy honing my music skills when I have the chance, which isn't often these last few years. :) Life is good and I think each year it keeps getting better.

*What is one of your most embarrassing moments? Adolescence...and some of college. :) 

*Where is the most amazing place you've ever been? Paris, Prague, Rome. Its hard to choose from among the three.

*How did you and your significant other meet? I was coerced into taking him to a dance in high school to support my friend. It was a horrible date and we didn't talk for almost 2 years afterwards.

*What was one of your favorite vacations? In college I spent a month and a half in Europe.

*What is the first concert you went to? Garth Brooks!

*When was the last time you cried? Last night.

*What is one of your most embarrassing moments? 
 

My friends and I went on vacation. I was taking a shower (with a non see through shower curtain of coarse) and another girl was doing her hair. Just as she opened the door to leave the shower curtain fell down and, as luck would have it, I was standing there naked as all the rest of our friends came back in from swimming- just in time to see me! Luckily they were all girls....

Where is the most amazing place you've ever been? 

This is a hard question for me because I love to travel and have learned something new from every place I've been.  I might say Switzerland...?  I remember using an old fashioned skeleton key to open the door to my room,  sleeping in a down comforter, on a down matress, etc., waking up to a cow bell, and then walking down the street in mist and seeing the most beautiful green grass and swiss homes.  It was heaven!

What are your top five favorite things to do? 

My husband and I playing with our two boys, reading, piano, camping, hiking and fishing.

If you could eat at any restaurant for your birthday, what would it be?  

Cafe Madrid.  I've never eaten there but they are supposed to have authentic paella and I LOVE paella! (a famous Spanish dish)
